Making a Will: What to Consider and How the Process Works

Thinking about what happens when we pass away can feel overwhelming. But planning for it makes all the difference to those we leave behind. That’s why making a Will is one of the most important things you can do.

A Will isn’t just a legal formality. It’s your voice after you’ve gone. It ensures your wishes are carried out, your loved ones are provided for, and your estate is handled with care. You appoint someone you trust as the Executor of your Will—someone who’ll do right by you and yours.

People often think making a Will is simple. But there are a number of important things to consider:

  • Spousal needs
  • Children’s needs
  • Future care needs
  • Inheritance Tax
  • Complex family scenarios – children from a previous relationship, estranged relatives

All these factors are carefully considered through our Will drafting service.

Every person is different. So, every Will should be too.

That’s why we take a personal approach. We meet every client face-to-face. We talk through their life, their worries, their wishes. It gives us a clearer picture of what matters most to them. We believe getting to know you is essential.

When we understand your life, we can shape your Will to fit your circumstances. No confusion. No missed steps. Just peace of mind that, when the time comes, everything is in place.

What Are the Steps – and How Long Will It Take?

Making a Will is straightforward when you’re guided by someone who knows what they’re doing. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Initial Meeting
We start with a conversation. In person, not just over email. We take the time to understand your personal circumstances, your family situation, and your wishes.
  2. Tailored Advice
After our meeting, we consider any potential legal issues—inheritance tax, future care needs, family dynamics—and advise you on the best way forward. This part is important. It’s where we shape the Will to fit your circumstances.
  3. Drafting the Will
We prepare a draft for you to review. You’ll have the chance to read it, reflect, and ask any questions. If something needs changing, we’ll change it.
  4. Signing and Witnessing
Once you’re happy with the draft, we arrange a signing appointment. It must be signed correctly, with two witnesses present, to be legally valid.
  5. Storing the Will Safely
We discuss safe storage, so your Will is protected and easily found when it’s needed.

Timeframe

We aim to complete most Wills within two to three weeks from the date of our initial meeting. If your situation is urgent or time-sensitive, we can often work to a shorter timescale. We can also arrange home visits should this be required.
